Do you think of retirement as a carefree time in some distant future? If so, we recommend that you have a good plan in place. Even though retirement may seem a long way off, our experience is that it can catch people out when they realise how much they really need to retire, and how far away from that position they are. The sooner you can start planning the better.

How much will you need to fund the lifestyle you have planned? We can help you consider your financial position, as well as things such as the right retirement age, living arrangements, health impacts, the length of time you need your savings to support you, and we can help you build a plan for helping turn your hopes and dreams into reality.

What to expect from us

Some of the areas we can help with during this stage of life include:

Estate planning

• Review wills/powers of attorney/beneficiary arrangements to ensure that they are up to date.

• Consider any charitable bequests.

• Review shareholdings, trusteeships and directorships for adequate successor arrangements.

• Consider adequacy of funeral arrangements.

• Identify all assets owned and ensure they are capable of transfer.

• Consider capital gains tax issues if inheritance asset needs to be sold.

Investments

• Review asset allocation.

• Review debts and borrowings. Consider consolidating or repaying debts to ease cash flow.

• Help you manage any inheritance. Does Capital Gains tax apply? How will the assets be received? Are there stipulations/trust conditions on the inheritance?

• Consider how an inheritance may impact Centrelink entitlements if applicable

• Review Superannuation/Retirement funding

• Review retirement income requirements.

• Revisit existing superannuation funding where applicable.

• Consider additional contributions where applicable/practical.

• Make sure you are taking advantage of all available concessions for superannuation.

Insurance and protection

• Is life cover adequate or, as your superannuation balances grow and your debts reduce, is it still required?

• Should Trauma, TPD and income protection policies be considered/removed/reduced?

Lifestyle issues

• Is the family home adequate?

• Are there any immediate asset purchases under consideration?

• Is travel a strong driver for you?

• Are there any current personal financial issues that need to be taken care of?

• Has an inheritance been received and has the estate been settled? Who is the executor of the will?

• Are there any pending lifestyle changes? (i.e. Divorce)
